What it is

Every autumn, UK shoppers start hunting for ways to stay warm and keep damp at bay without cranking up the heating. This October, that shift has arrived with a bang. According to Look Into’s UK Demand Index for the week to 15 October 2026, which tracks Google Trends search interest, the five fastest-rising product searches were all heating or damp items:

  • Electric blanket: up 54.0% week on week, the biggest move of all 20 terms tracked
  • Smart thermostat: up 35.6%
  • Hot water bottle: up 27.1%
  • Dehumidifier: up 25.6%
  • Heated airer: up 22.3%

At the same time, summer kit is falling away: tower fan searches dropped 10.7%.

Why it’s interesting

This isn’t one viral product. It’s a whole category moving together, which usually means real, lasting demand rather than a TikTok blip. The pattern points to the same idea: heat the person, not the house. An electric blanket or hot water bottle warms you directly, while a heated airer dries washing indoors without the tumble dryer.

Damp is the other half of the story. Look Into notes that dehumidifier interest overtook tower fans back in mid-August, and the gap has been widening ever since. Drying clothes indoors in a cold British flat means condensation, and condensation means mould. That’s why dehumidifiers and heated airers are climbing side by side.

Smart thermostats are the “spend once, save all winter” option. Look Into’s own guide frames them as picks to make “before the October price rise”, so it’s worth checking your energy supplier’s current rates before deciding whether one pays off for you.

Also climbing, though more gently: carbon monoxide alarms (+10.7%) and slow cookers (+8.2%). Both fit the same picture of people settling in for winter at home.

Where to get it

  • Electric blankets and heated throws: Argos, John Lewis, Dunelm and Amazon UK all stock big-name brands such as Dreamland and Silentnight.
  • Heated airers: Lakeland’s Dry:Soon range is the well-known option; Dunelm and Amazon carry cheaper alternatives.
  • Dehumidifiers: Currys, Argos and Amazon UK. Compressor models suit colder rooms less well than desiccant models, so check the spec.
  • Smart thermostats: Google Nest, Hive and tado° are sold at Currys, Amazon UK, and sometimes through energy suppliers.

Always check the product carries a UKCA or CE mark, and for electric blankets, follow the manufacturer’s safety and replacement advice.

Verdict

Worth jumping on now. This is a seasonal trend with real data behind it, and these products solve genuine winter problems for UK households. If you buy just one thing, make it whichever fixes your biggest problem: an electric blanket if you’re cold, or a dehumidifier plus heated airer if your windows stream every morning. Buy before the first proper cold snap, when stock and deals get thin.
